Nearly 700,000 spinal fractures occur each year and at least 25 percent of women over the age of 50 will suffer from one or more spinal fractures during their lifetime. Saint Joseph Hospital offers an advanced interventional radiology treatment for painful spinal fractures often caused by osteoporosis.
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures caused by a progressive weakening of the bone, or osteoporosis. Performed on an outpatient basis, an interventional radiologist injects a surgical bone cement into the crushed vertebrae to stabilize it. Often, more than one crushed vertebrae can be treated in a single one-hour procedure.
Until now, individuals suffering from the pain of spinal fractures either had to reduce their activity, take medications that often resulted in negative side effects or underwent back surgery. Vertebroplasty is a safe and effective alternative. In fact, studies have shown that 75 to 90 percent of patients report that their pain has been eliminated or drastically reduced within 48 hours of undergoing vertebroplasty.
