New Mom Pleased with Entire Package
of Care - Before, During and After Delivery
Heather Durham and Haley,
born in April 2008.
Heather and Jarrett Durham were a little surprised when their new baby, Haley, arrived a month early in April 2008.
At 5 a.m., Heather's water broke and the Bucktown couple headed to The Family Birthplace at Saint Joseph Hospital. Heather was 36 weeks along in her pregnancy, and full-term is considered 37 weeks (with average gestation at 40 weeks).
"When we got to triage, the nurses made me feel comfortable and definitely put me at ease," said the 30-year-old, noting she was nervous about going into labor early. Triage is the initial evaluation of mothers-to-be when they arrive at The Family Birthplace.
Everything else went smoothly, with the baby delivered by Maria Tam, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist in practice with Rose Diakos, M.D., and Barbara Diakos, M.D. Heather saw all three physicians during her pregnancy.
At 5 pounds, 15 ounces, Haley was perfectly healthy and her parents were overjoyed at having their first baby. A high-risk newborn specialist was in the delivery room, in case the baby required specialized care.
"I had the most outstanding experience and everyone was great," said Heather, a stay-at-home mom. "The nurses were more than friendly - how much they seemed to care was unbelievable."
Heather spent two days in the hospital, and had ongoing visits from a lactation consultant to help her with breastfeeding.
New Moms Support Group
Prior to delivery, Heather and Jarrett participated in the hospital's prenatal classes. A week after delivery, Heather joined the new moms weekly support group. About a dozen moms get together to talk about various topics, listen to speakers, weigh their infants and get one-on-one advice from a maternal child educator and lactation consultant who attend. This level of support has been helpful for Heather, who has made friends in the group and helped mentor the younger moms. She and Haley still occasionally attend the sessions.
"The whole package was great," said Heather, about her care before, during and after delivery. "I am greatly appreciative."
