Cancer
Breast Cancer Support Group
This monthly support group is for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Linda Ritt, adjunct professor in Counseling and Human Services at Roosevelt University, will provide valuable information about healing in an environment where group members can share personal experiences and provide emotional support for one another. Sessions will take place the third Thursday of every month from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s imaging conference room on the third floor. Do you have cancer? Are you looking for additional emotional support? Join Saint Joseph Hospital's Cancer Support Group for men and women battling the disease. Discussions are facilitated by a social worker and nurse. Guest speakers are occasionally invited to address the group. Free.

Digital Mammography
Digital mammography takes digital pictures of the breasts, emphasizes contrasts and identifies abnormalities that may not be as visible as traditional film mammography.
• Digital mammography is used in conjunction with a computer aided detection system – often referred to as a 2nd opinion – that identifies potential concerns even before the radiologist views the results.
• Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no history of it in their family.
• Saint Joseph Hospital has a 100 percent Digital Mammography Department.
Appointments are available seven days a week, including evenings, usually
within 24 to 48 hours. Give yourself peace of mind and get a mammogram. A written order from a physician is required. For an appointment, call 773-665-3060.
Mammogram and Manicure Mondays
In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, women who receive their mammograms at Saint Joseph Hospital will also receive a free manicure from a professional manicurist in our NEW Wellness Room, which is the perfect place to relax. Convenient mammogram appointments available Monday through Sunday, including evenings, can be scheduled generally within 24 to 48 hours. Results are available within 24 hours, often sooner. A physician's order is required.

Ovarian Cancer Support Group
This monthly support group provides help and information for anyone who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Topics covered during these meetings are determined by participants. Please call 773-665-6992 for more information or to register. Free.

Weight No Longer - Weight Loss Surgery Information Session
Bariatric seminars will be held on the first Thursday of each month, unless otherwise noted, beginning at 6 p.m. in The Manor Classroom in The Manor Professional Office Building, 2913 North Commonwealth Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Valet service is available at the main entrance. Parking also available in the visitor parking facility next to the hospital.

Cross Training for Runners
Are you a runner with an aching low back, sore knees, or heel pain? Join Angela Dietzen, P.T., M.O.M.T., as she educates you on key abdominal and lower extremity muscles to include in your workout program. Anatomy and muscle function will be discussed, followed by demonstration of five exercises that will help keep you injury and pain free. Registration is required by Tuesday, September 17. Julie Polt, P.T., Physical Therapist will conduct a runners' clinic, which will provide an individualized assessment of your running mechanics and lower extremity flexibility. Based on your running analysis, she will also teach you exercises to improve your flexibility and strength and provide information on running shoe wear. Prostate Screening
Includes a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test to determine risk and a digital rectal examination. Timothy Hollister, M.D., Medical Director, Radiation Oncology, and Spencer Land, M.D., Urology will perform the examinations. This screening is for men ages 45 through 75 only. PSA results will be mailed to patients. By appointment only. Registration required by Monday, November 2, 2009. This is a free program.

Cumulative Trauma Disorders
The most common types of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) include carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. These CTDs are often caused by repetitive motion and stress on joints, tendons, and nerves. Julie Polt, P.T., Physical Therapist will conduct a runners' clinic, which will provide an individualized assessment of your running mechanics and lower extremity flexibility. Based on your running analysis, she will also teach you exercises to improve your flexibility and strength and provide information on running shoe wear. This free program will take place at the Saint Joseph Hospital Rehabilitation and Fitness Center at 1525 W. Belmont Ave.

Bariatric seminars will be held on the first Thursday of each month, unless otherwise noted, beginning at 6 p.m. in The Manor Classroom in The Manor Professional Office Building, 2913 North Commonwealth Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Valet service is available at the main entrance. Parking also available in the visitor parking facility next to the hospital.

Learn how to maintain control of your blood glucose level during pregnancy. Glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise and fetal well-being will be discussed. Are you a new mother looking for additional emotional support? Do you have questions about your baby's development? Join the Mom Network, a weekly support group for new mothers that provides parenting support and information. Topics covered in the weekly meetings are determined by participants and typically include "the baby blues," fatigue, feeding issues and more. Free.
