The hospital is accredited by the Health Facility Accreditation Program until 2008. Accreditation by HFAP demonstrates that the hospital has met all of its required standards in the areas of patient safety, environmental safety and quality. These accreditation standards are based on nationally accepted federal guidelines.

Clinical Distinctions
Many of the hospital's cardiologists are nationally recognized leaders in their field and present research worldwide. The cardiac surgery team benchmarks its results against centers of excellence throughout the nation to ensure the best outcomes for patients, which includes a mortality rate of less than 1 percent in 2004.
Minimally invasive procedures are offered, including diagnostic:
- Cardiac catheterizations and angiograms
- Coronary balloon angioplasty
- Coronary stent placement
- Coronary and peripheral atherectomy
- Peripheral and renal angiogram
- Peripheral and renal stent placement
- Bi-ventricular permanent pacemaker insertion

The hospital's Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting national standards in diabetes self-management education.
In 2004, Saint Joseph Hospital's Emergency Department received a four-star customer service award from Professional Research Consultants (PRC) for excellent patient satisfaction. The hospital was one of only 34 facilities in the U.S. to receive the award.
Saint Joseph Hospital's Emergency Department meets American College of Cardiology guidelines for Primary Angioplasty, which means patients who present with cardiac symptoms receive superior treatment quickly.
The Imaging Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology, which means the department meets rigorous quality standards in the areas of equipment and technology. It also ensures technologists meet current licensing requirements and radiologists have the proper training.
Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS
The hospital introduced one of the first HIV/AIDS units in Chicago. Today, the program helps patients participate in clinical trials and research.
The Laboratory/Pathology Department is accredited by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), which ensures the quality and excellence of the services provided. The Department also has Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments certification, a national Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requirement for all clinical laboratories. Pathologists are board-certified in both anatomic and clinical pathology.
Patient Care
In 2005, two patient units received Gold Achievement Awards from Professional Research Consultants (PRC) for patient satisfaction.
Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery
Plastic Surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have years of experience as well as a national reputation as leaders in their field.
The Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit recently exceeded national and regional scores in the area of inpatient functional improvement skills, including walking, dressing, eating and bathing. To achieve such high marks, the staff collaborated with referring physicians to develop individualized rehabilitation programs for each patient. The unit benchmarks its performance based on data collected by Uniform Data Service (UDS), a clinical database used by rehabilitation providers across the nation.

The hospital's residency program is impressive. All graduating residents - 100 percent - passed their required board certification examinations.
Skilled Nursing
The Skilled Nursing Unit passed its annual Illinois Department of Public Health survey (IDPH) in September. The unit was assessed on its compliance with IDPH skilled nursing and long-term care licensure rules and regulations and The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines.
Stroke Care
Saint Joseph Hospital is a Primary Stroke Center certified by The Joint Commission for using stroke care protocols that have been proven as efficient and high quality.
